Following on from the large number of finalists and Championships won at the Hamilton City Netball finals recently, further success for St Peter’s Netball was received last night at the annual Netball WBOP Awards at Sky City.
The St Peter’s Netball programme won the best overall Secondary School Netball Programme in the zone.
The zone includes all Waikato, Bay of Plenty schools and is a huge accolade for netball within our region.
The award encompasses the excellent player, umpire and coaching pathway we have for our students. External support and courses are in place for our students that are trained in theory and practical sessions for their umpiring and coaching. Our student coaches have done an amazing job in their roles as co-coaches or assistant coaches. Premier and senior players either involved with coaching or umpiring a team and positive role models to the junior teams.
Strengthening links with outside of school netball community groups have also been of value to the programme with external umpiring, coaching sessions and player observations. All Academy players have received training through the Netball Smart physio programme that has been beneficial to injury prevention.
Our players are developing skill wise all the time and the introduction and quality of delivery within our Year 7-10 sports academies are evident. Regular strength and conditioning sessions, skill assessment, goal setting and reflection enables players to be able to perform to the best of their ability. Nutrition, Sports Psychology and Video analysis has also been delivered through the Academies. A bi-annual Netball Tour to Sydney, Australia for junior netballers is a highlight where students learn all the life skills of touring and playing abroad.
Our Premier team are the Waikato Secondary School Champions, sixteen of our players were selected for Hamilton City Rep Teams and forty players qualified as umpires that regularly officiate on Saturdays, trials and exchanges.
The Netball programme has been driven and led by Ange Russek with outstanding support from students, staff, parents and volunteers.
“Netball at St Peter’s is going from strength to strength, and with the recent appointment of Te Aroha Keenan as Netball Director, the future is exciting. Watch this space!” said Ange.
