Junior Premier Girls Basketball

Our Junior Premier Girls Basketball team got off to a great start at the Junior Premierships Zone 2 Secondary Schools Basketball Tournament in Rotorua, with wins over Nga Taiatea (69-54), Tauranga Girls (70-69), Waihi (60-51) and Paeroa (83-29). After losses to Mt Maunganui College (66-59) and Rotorua Girls (80-47), the team played Hamilton Girls High in the playoff for 3rd and 4th. It was a slow start to the final game, but clawing back from a huge deficit was a character-building challenge. There were some fantastic moments in the game and a lot of learning for the girls, finishing in 4th place for the tournament.

Senior Premier Girls Basketball

The first two days at the Schick Premierships 'AA' Zone 2 Secondary Schools Basketball Tournament in Rotorua saw our Senior Premier Girls Basketball team achieve some impressive victories, with wins over Cambridge High (117-17), Hauraki Plains College (119-29) and Tauranga Girls (103-35). The girls continue to demonstrate their strong team effort and work ethic. The 72-45 win over Rotorua Girls, in what was an intense final pool game, saw them go through to the next round as top of their pool. The girls went on to beat Hamilton Girls in the final (94-32) to qualify First in our region for Nationals. Seven games, seven wins. Amassing an amazing 682 points for and only 223 against, with an average winning margin of 65 points a game.

Senior Premier Girls' Basketball

Senior Premier Boys Basketball

Our Senior Premier Boys Basketball team have had a mixed bag in their Schick Premierships 'AA' Zone 2 Secondary Schools Basketball Tournament in Rotorua. Starting with a victory over John Paul College (88-58), they then suffered a big loss to St John’s College, the number 1 ranked team in the country. This gave the boys a great insight into what is needed for the well-drilled teams. These lessons were clearly taken into their next match against Whakatane High School, where they took out a 124-35 win. The boys came prepared by executing their personal roles to make a smooth effort on both defence and offence. The boys then faced Gisborne Boys High, the toughest game of the season for the boys. The boys did well going into the 2nd half 17 points down to crawl back to a 1 point lead, only to lose it in the last play of the game. They then came back from the loss to win against a well-established Fraser High School. They then faced Tauranga Boys High in the playoff for 5th and 6th…

Cycling

Day one of the Northern Cycling Tour in Auckland on Saturday saw 14 Top Ten places across the Individual Time Trial and Hill Climb up Mt Wellington.

Jacob Spring took out 2nd place in the Under 17 Boys ITT and Hamish Banks won the Under 15 Boys. Hamish also finished 3rd in the gruelling race against the clock up the very steep and exposed Mt Wellington.

Alex Brackenbury, Oliver Watson-Palmer, Kane Foster and Frankie Wright all picked up fourth places.

The third and final stage is the New Zealand Schools Criterium Champs, held today. The points accumulated from the three stages will find the overall winner of the Northern Tour.

Junior Boys Football

The Junior Boys Football team haven’t had an easy road at the Hillsdeane Junior Football Tournament in Tauranga, suffering losses against Bethlehem College, Kings High School Dunedin, Mahurangi College, Rangitoto College, Rosmini College, and Northcote College. Regularly playing in their Away strip, a change of playing kit went hand in hand with a change of fortune on Thursday, as they took an 8-0 victory over Melville High School. The whole team put in to practice the lessons learned throughout the tournament, making good decisions, pushing passes to space and marking opposition attackers with great conviction. Mitchell Daley scored a hat trick within an inspired 15 minutes. Alex Stephens worked tirelessly in midfield, helping to create chances as well as stymie opposition attacks. Nate Murray added to the score, as did Tait Broadhurst with an outstanding hat trick and Bryn Tomlinson with one more goal.

1st XI Girls Football

After two close losses to Otago Girls High and Takapuna Grammar at the NZSS Girls Football Lotto Premier Tournament in Christchurch, the 1st XI Girls Football team had a better Day two, beating St Andrews Christchurch (2-0) and drawing with Epsom Girls Grammar (1-1). The following day saw an exciting match against Palmerston North in cold, wet Christchurch conditions. With the scores tied 2-2 at full time, the teams went to penalties. At the end of the five shots, penalty scores were tied at 4 -4 so the teams progressed to sudden death. After another four team members had a shot, Stacey Bell sealed the St Peter’s victory, 9-8. Day four saw a tight game against Auckland Diocesan, who in the end took out the win 2-0. The girls finished the tournament by beating Burnside 2-1. The girls play improved throughout the week and highlights were wins over the top two Christchurch sides Burnside and St Andrew and a draw with eventual third-place team Epsom Girls.

1st XI Boys Football

The 1st XI Boys Football team went down to Rathkeale College 3-2 in their first game of the NZSS Boys Football Lotto Premier Tournament in Napier but came back with a well-deserved 2-0 win over Rutherford College. The following morning the boys played a very good St Thomas team, who were quick and took their chances well to claim a 5-0 win. The boys performed better in the afternoon against Palmerston North Boys High, staying in the game longer to build pressure on the opposition and get two late goals to win 2-0.

Day three saw another tough game against Cashmere High School. Up against a very strong breeze going straight down the ground, St Peter’s battled well into the wind for the first half and were down 1-0 at half time. In the second half with the wind behind them, St Peter’s scored four goals to seal a 4-2 win.

The final games of the tournament saw St Peter’s play a very good St Patrick's College team, whose great forward movement and ball control saw them take the win 3-0. St Peter’s worked really well, with some fantastic saves by Joe Knowles in goal.

A huge disappointment was losing the goalkeeper Joe Knowles to injuries from a late tackle, which took him out of the final game against King's College today. Despite this, the boys played well, with Blake Bibby going into the goal and doing a great job. They were unlucky to lose the game 3-1.

U15 Rugby

St Peter’s Golf Team

It was a perfectly clear day on Monday at the Cromwell Golf Club for the National Secondary Schools Golf Teams Championship. The firm and fast course conditions caused some real problems for the 17 teams competing. The St Peter’s team of George Hodgson, Ing Iadpluem, George Thorpe and Rhys Thomas were in 4th place after a solid morning performance, well-led by Ing and Rhys with rounds of 73. In the afternoon course conditions became very tricky and controlling the ball became increasingly difficult. The St Peter’s team worked hard to stay in touch with the leaders, but couldn’t close the gap and finished in 5th place. Ing led the way with a 71 to finish 3rd best individual, and Rhys with a 78 to tie in 8th place.

Ing Iadpluem continued her strong form in the final round of the NZ Golf Age Group Championship. She recorded a one-under-par 71 to finish on a 5 under par total and outright 4th place in the Girls Under 17 Championship (5th across all girls age groups).

Meanwhile, at Cromwell, Rhys Thomas recorded his lowest tournament round, a 1 under par 71, to finish 13th in the Boys Under 17 Championship (30th across all boys age groups).

George Hodgson finished 10th in the Boys Under 15 (63rd overall). George Thorpe finished 28th in the boys Under 19 (63rd overall). Oak Archvarin finished 20th in the boys Under 19 (39th overall).

1st XI Girls Hockey

The 1st XI Girls Hockey team got off to a great start to the Kate Trolove Cup in Hamilton, with an 8-0 win over Pinehurst. They followed this up with more wins over Waiuku College (7-0), Mount Maunganui College (3-1), Aquinas College (9-0) and Kingsway School (5-0). This puts the girls through to the final on Friday, up against Mount Maunganui College where a close game saw them take two goals in the last five minutes of the game to win 3-1 and claim the win of the Kate Trolove Cup. The impressive scorelines in each of the games saw St Peter’s feature in three of the Top 10 Goal Scorer spots on the final day of the tournament – Arabella Barrio (8), Jorgia James (7) and Lucy Jeffries (7).

Golf

1st XI Boys Hockey

The first game for the 1st XI Boys Hockey team at the Olympic Stick Tournament in Pukekohe, up against Howick College, saw a sluggish start finished with a flourish of four field goals and 2 penalty corners. They then played Botany Downs, with a mission to score 12 goals. They had already reached this by the third quarter, the final game score 16-1. This game allowed the boys to try new positions on the field and practice set play. After two relatively easy matches, the game against Te Puke High School was a nail-biting quarter-final, Te Puke pulling out all stops on defence. A splendid corner post shot from Cole Murray gave St Peter’s a 3-1 lead in the last 2 minutes of the game. The semi-final saw St Peter’s play their regular foe, Hamilton Boys (Development), winning 3-1 to make it through the final against Kamo High School on Friday. From the first whistle, the St Peter’s boys played with determination. The two teams had met last year playing out for 9 and 10 on the ladder; this year they were one and two in their tournament. St Peter’s were dominant around the turf throughout the game, and on the few occasions that the opposition broke through our defenders were solid preventing Kamo from scoring. Final score 3:0, winning the Olympic Sticks Tournament. Impressive scoring from the St Peter’s boys saw them feature prominently in the Top Goal Scorers throughout, by the final day of the tournament sitting in two places of the Top 10 places - Will Montgomerie (7) and Luke Graham (6).

Premier Netball

The Premier Netball team have had a hugely successful time at the UNISS Netball Tournament in North Harbour. After wins over Pukekohe High School (44-19), McCauley High School (37-25), Hamilton Girls High School (34-20), St Cuthberts (32-12) and St Paul’s (41-21), the girls then progressed through to the Top 8. They then suffered a loss to Saint Kentigern’s after a close, tight tussle, but followed this up with impressive wins over Baradene (41-31) and Epson Girls Grammar (41-22). This not only progressed the team through to the semi-final, but they also made history, making it through to the New Zealand Secondary Schools tournament for the first time ever. Winning their Final against Howick 37-31 they then returned to face Saint Kentigern’s in the final. They fought a good fight to the finish, 44-21 at the final whistle to St Kentigern’s, taking out the Silver. Out of 20 girls named in the UNISS Netball Tourney Team, St Peter’s achieved an impressive four - Waiata Jennings, Katie Te Ao, Kataraina Ormsby, and Atlanta Bruce. This was the highest number of students in the squad from any one school.

Premier Netball

St Peter’s Rockclimbing team

The St Peter’s Rockclimbing team of Dyson Down, Esme Macgillivray, Jorja Perko, Katie Smith, Frances Brannigan, Hunter Coxon, and Alex Brannigan competed at the New Zealand Secondary Schools National Climbing Championships in Tauranga, alongside more than 100 other competitors.

The challenges of four top ropes, two boulders, and two speed climbs were all done, one after the other with only a 3-minute break between each challenge. This was a tough hour for each climber. The team fought hard, helped and supported each other.

On Tuesday the team gathered back at Rocktopia to support Alex Brannigan who came in 8th to qualify for the semi-finals. With his quiet confidence, Alex calmly and smoothly attacked his challenges. Despite a couple of unlucky breaks, Alex managed to keep his 8th placing among some truly formidable competition.

Under 15 Rugby

Day one at the Lindisfarne Under 15s Rugby Tournament saw the St. Peter’s U15 up against a tough St Johns Hamilton outfit. The boys fought to the end with captain Andrew Smith leading the way with two tries. The next day saw the boys bounce back, up against the proud Maori school of Te Aute. St Peter’s dominated early but failed to cross the line until the 17th minute, with a strong powerhouse run from Morgan Bolstad. This sparked life into St Peter’s boys with a few more tries following straight after, going into the break 25-0. The second half started well as St Peter’s pressured Te Aute inside their own half, forcing turnovers and capitalising with the boys crossing over for early tries. While Te Aute played with pride and good energy, St Peter’s proved too strong on the day, finishing the game as winners with a score of 43-7.

Rock Climbing

St Peter’s Table Tennis team

The St Peter’s Table Tennis team had great success at the National Secondary Schools Table Tennis Team Competition in Tauranga, coming first place in the B grade. Matthew So had an outstanding overall performance by winning all of his singles matches. Bogie Jutanopprat and Phoom Panyasurarit overcame intense pressure to secure the championship by winning many close games.

Lacrosse

Our Girls Lacrosse team had a great start to the NZSS Girls Lacrosse Championship in Auckland, with wins over Selwyn College (12-1), Whangaparoa College (16-1) and Hamilton Girls High (9-7).

The game against Hamilton Girls High was a much closer game but saw the St Peter’s girls come out firing and bring a really high-level game. The dominant midfield, combined with some fantastic attacking moves, saw St Peter’s come out victorious and top of their pool. The girls then faced Sacred Heart Girls College, an incredible game with major dominance in the midfield. Some incredible combinations saw St Peter’s scored some fantastic goals with Brooke Bolstad, Renee Edge and Harriet McElroy dominating the scorecard to win 20-4.

The semi-final against Hamilton Girls was a hard-fought game by St Peter’s. With the score 0-0 at quarter time, the second quarter saw St Peter’s step it up with some beautiful goals from Renee Edge, Emma Nola, and Brooke Bolstad. Strong defence and a few more excellent goals saw St Peter’s take the win 9-7 and earn a place in the final against Epsom Girls.

An absolutely outstanding Final against Epsom Girls once again demonstrated the dominance in the midfield, as Brooke Bolstad powered through the Epsom defences to score five goals. Other contributions from Emma Nola, Renee Edge, Kendall Turner, Harriet McElroy, and Alex Evans, combined with almost impenetrable defences, saw St Peter’s take the win 11-5. This win saw them named back to back New Zealand Secondary Schools' Girls' Lacrosse Champions.
