Boys Football
The St Peter’s Boys Football team had a very strong start to the AIMS Games campaign, with an 8-1 win over Evans Bay Intermediate, a 6-1 win over Gordonton School and a draw against Kerikeri School on Day 1.
The next days of play saw a nail-biting win against Mission Heights, followed by a loss to Murray's Bay Intermediate, the top team in the competition and then a draw with Waimauku, where Riley Noonan scored the equalizer in the very last minute for a nail-biting finish! Whilst they boys suffered a tough loss to Blockhouse Bay Intermediate, they still kept their spirits up and birthday boy Mitchell Robinson netted a goal near the end of the game - the result of a good team effort.
Day 4 saw a close loss followed by a 3-0 win over local school Berkley Intermediate, a great team effort with some strong centre mid-play by St Peter’s. Caleb Woodfield headed the charge scoring a stunning hat trick for the team. The final day of play saw St Peter’s play Somerville Intermediate. Two very evenly matched teams, a 2-2 draw at the full time resulted in a penalty shoot-out. Keeper Asher Rowe kept his cool throughout. Flawless shooting by Caleb Woodfield, Theo Anthony, Mitchell Robinson, Riley Noonan, and George Anthony saw St Peter’s win the shoot-out 5-3. St Peter’s were very controlled during the shoot-out and gracious in their win, finishing in 27th place out of 56 teams.
Girls Football
The St Peter’s Girls Football had an excellent first day of AIMS Games, winning their three games against Papamoa College (2-0), Raroa Intermediate (4-1) and St Kent’s (3-1).
Day 2 saw a cold and wet start, but a convincing win over St Cuthbert’s 6-0, where two players scored their first goals of the season. The girls showed great determination throughout the day but lost 3-1 to St Mary’s in the second game, where the final score didn’t represent how close the game was.
Day 3 of saw an incredible battle against St Thomas, creating chances and fighting hard, but ending up losing 1-0 after St Thomas scored from a corner kick that went into the back corner of the net!
Next was a 0-0 draw against Gordonton School. The final game of the day against Northcote Intermediate saw the St Peter’s girls start strong and take a 1-0 lead. It was another great game with the girls stepping up, supporting each other and playing with courage and determination, unfortunately going down 2-1.
The girls ended the pool play with 4 wins, 1 draw and 3 losses.
Golf
Ben Ambler started his AIMS Games well, finishing day 1 in 2nd place overall from a field of over 50 golfers, after a round at Omokoroa Golf Course. Day 2 was played at Te Puke Golf Course in very wet conditions, Ben finishing the day in 4th position.
The third round was played at the Tauranga Golf Course. A good round, shooting to his handicap with a score of 77, saw Ben finish the day in 3rd place overall.
The final round, played at the Mount Maunganui Golf Course, had the top-seeded group followed by a film crew which added to the pressure of the day. Sadly a triple bogey on hole 12 and a few bogeys towards the end saw Ben shoot 4 over his handicap, and an 82 for the round. This opened the door for the 4th placegetter from Christchurch, who shot 4 under his handicap to claim the bronze medal.
Ben ended up 4th overall, which is an incredible achievement from a field of 52 golfers.
Mixed 6-Aside Hockey
It was a great start for our Mixed 6-Aside Hockey team at AIMS Games, with a 10-2 victory over Kaitao Intermediate. After a bye on Monday afternoon, Day 2 saw another 10-2 victory over Hilltop School. This result moved St Peter’s into the Top 16.
Wednesday saw a match against Chisnallwood Intermediate. Down 6-2 at half time, St Peter’s showed some real fight and belief to claw their way back into the match with an outstanding second-half performance, narrowly losing 8-7.
Thursday saw a great 6-3 win against Howick Intermediate, which placed them up against Cambridge Middle School in their final day of the tournament. A 2-2 draw saw them take 13th position, an impressive placing out of the 56 teams at the competition.
Mountain Biking
Iestyn Foster rode in his first ever Mountain Biking event at AIMS Games. He had a great ride, lots of fun, and is looking forward to competing again next year.
Netball
The St Peter’s Netball team started exceptionally well, with a 30-2 win over Hilltop School. Their second game for the day against Whakarewarewa School was played in very cold conditions. Great teamwork saw them take out another win, 26-14.
The final game of the day against Te Wharekura o Mauao was tougher, but the whole team stepped up to secure the 21-14 win.
The first two games on Day 2 against Mahurangi College and Balmoral School were well played, finishing with some good improvement and well-deserved wins. The third game, against a very strong Whakatane Intermediate, saw the girls lift their game and put in by far their best all-round performance of the season. Strong defence and working until the end saw them fall just short of the win.
Day 3 started with a win against a strong Balmacewen Intermediate which qualified the girls for A grade. A great win against Albany Junior High and a hard-fought match against Somerville Intermediate followed, where the girls fought back after trailing well behind to lose 20-15 at the final whistle.
Thursday saw the girls front a determined team from Holy Cross School, Papatoetoe. As always, the girls played with heart but missed out with the game going to the opposition, 28 -18. for the final day of the competition, the girls played Tauranga Intermediate School, where a close loss meant they finished in 18th place out of 125 teams, an amazing result.
Rugby Sevens
Our Rugby Sevens team kicked off their first match against St Paul’s College, Auckland, narrowly losing 19-15. The second game saw St Peter’s play Monrad Intermediate School from Palmerston North. Although they played a really good game, St Peter’s were able to come out on top 19-7 after some great teamwork.
Day 2 saw a cold start, but a good 38 – 0 win over Helensville School allowed them to warm up. A couple of close losses saw them finish the pool play in 5th position in their pool.
One of the standout matches was against Tuakau College, the best game to date for the St Peter’s boys. They tackled a big opposition well and scored some great tries, taking away a 26-12 win.
The final days of play saw mixed results, with the boys finishing in 34th place out of the 55 teams in the competition.
Tennis
Year 7 student Annabel Chapman competed in the combined Year 7 & 8 Tennis Singles. Given her current ranking, she went straight into the main draw, without having to qualify.
She had a great experience playing against the top players in the country.
